Seeding Time

Sowing Time at G’s Lane – Preparing for a Blooming Season

This time of year is all about getting seeds in the ground here at G’s Lane. Our little flower paddock is growing slowly but surely, and after last year’s success, we’re excited to do it all over again.

Back in 2024, our Paper Daisies stole the show. Not only did they bloom beautifully, but we were also able to harvest seed from those plants—which we’ve replanted alongside some natural regeneration in their original flower bed. This year, our seed tally so far includes more Paper Daisies and a fresh batch of Cosmos flowers, ready to bring their delicate charm and bee-friendly magic to the paddock.

Some might say it’s “sowing time” rather than “seeing time,” but really, it’s all part of the same beautiful process.

The first step is always bed preparation—and that means weeks of hands in the dirt, digging out weeds and unwanted grass to give the new seedlings the best chance. Our Esk soil tends to form quite a crust, which can make life tough for tiny seeds trying to push through, so we sprinkle a layer of garden soil on top. This softens the surface and gives the seeds a better start.

Once the soil is ready, we sprinkle the seeds over the bed. Depending on the seed’s weight, we either add a light dusting of soil on top or gently brush the soil with our hands to cover the seeds just enough—not too deep, not too shallow.

It’s a simple, patient ritual that connects us to the earth and the seasons. Now comes the waiting—watching, hoping, and getting ready for the moment when these tiny seeds transform into vibrant, buzzing life.

We’ll keep you posted as the paddock continues to grow.

Warmly,
The team at G’s Lane
