Frosty Beginnings & Blooming Hopes – June 2025 at G’s Lane

As June settles in, the cool air has certainly made its presence known here at G’s Lane. The frosts rolled in early this year, giving us a crisp start to winter in Esk. But while the mornings are chilly, this is one of the most beautiful times on the farm. With the birds singing and the sun sitting low in the sky, it’s a perfect season for getting things done—without breaking too much of a sweat.

This June also marks three years since we started our journey here at G’s Lane, and what a ride it's been. The land, the seasons, and the community have shaped this space into something really special, and we’re so grateful for where we are today.

Most of our plants are thriving despite the frosty mornings. We’ve only had to snip the tips off one or two frost-affected proteas, which is a small price to pay for otherwise healthy growth. As usual, we’re continuing to water this season’s protea plantings weekly—just like we’ve done in previous seasons—and they’re responding beautifully.

A few weeks ago, we seeded a couple of beds with Cosmos, and they had been flowering wonderfully. Unfortunately, the heavy frosts on the 13th and 14th gave them a bit of frostbite. Now it’s a waiting game to see whether the new buds will still push through and flower—we’re keeping hopeful.

Elsewhere on the farm, Echinacea seeds sown back in mid-April are slowly coming along, while the Paper Daisies are happily growing with only what nature provides—no extra watering needed. It’s always fascinating to see how each plant responds in its own way to the changing conditions.

Meanwhile, there’s a real buzz around town this week as Esk gears up for the Garden Fair—a highlight on the local calendar. We’re making our shopping list and hoping to pick up a few more protea plants to keep expanding our field. If you’re in the area, it’s a great time to stop by, connect with growers, and soak up the garden inspiration.

Thanks for following along with us. Whether you're a gardener, a flower lover, or just enjoy keeping up with farm life—stay warm, and we’ll see you soon.

Until next time,
The team at G’s Lane
