Bird Life at G’s Lane Esk – A Hidden Treasure for Bird Lovers
Bird life here at G’s Lane Esk is second to none. Birdwatching has become one of our favourite activities—it's peaceful, exciting, and always full of surprises. Whether we’re sitting back with a cuppa or busy with daily farm jobs, the sight (and sound) of birds around us brings so much joy.
We've been lucky enough to spot a wonderful variety of bird species, and we've even managed to capture some on camera—both handheld and on our trail camera. It’s always a thrill to look back at the footage and see what we've discovered. The diversity of birds in this area is truly impressive. Some are highly territorial birds of prey like the Eagle —large, majestic, and commanding. Others are tiny travellers, covering great distances each year as part of their migration like the King Fishers and Rainbow Bee Eater's. And then there’s the colour! From the sleekest jet-black feathers to birds that look like they’ve flown straight out of a rainbow. We have also been fortunate enough to capture a couple of night birds.
One of the most magical parts of life here is the early morning chorus. The musical choir at sunrise is nothing short of breathtaking. While we’re not bird experts, we enjoy the challenge of trying to identify the birds by sound before we even catch a glimpse of them. It’s a fun, rewarding experience that never gets old.
Watching the birds go about their day is fascinating—some dart around with incredible speed, while others glide gracefully through the air. I, "Mrs G’s Lane", especially love searching for little treasures the birds leave behind. Over time, we’ve built quite the collection of beautiful feathers—each one a unique and special find.
Below are just a few snapshots of some of the birds we’ve managed to photograph. They represent only a small sample of the amazing birdlife we’re fortunate to witness here at G’s Lane Esk.
