Among the Trees: Citrus Care at G’s Lane
We share our time amongst the trees here at G’s Lane. Each area on the property has its own unique needs, and we tend to them accordingly—slowly, mindfully, and with a lot of care.
One of our favourite zones to work in is the Citrus Patch, which we’ve just finished giving its annual royal treatment. This is a once-a-year deep care session where we go all out for these fruiting beauties.
Here’s what that looks like:
-
We start by digging around each tree, loosening the soil and removing any weeds and encroaching grass.
-
Each tree then receives four generous handfuls of blood and bone. This amount has increased over the years as the trees have grown larger and more vigorous.
-
After feeding, we mulch heavily using a rich blend of materials from around the farm and local community:
-
Used coffee grounds (thanks to our mates at Brisbane Valley Roasters)
-
Chipped timber and sticks
-
Shredded paper
-
Worm castings
-
And of course, llama poo, from a near by farm.
-
This homemade mulch not only feeds the trees slowly but also helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Between these big yearly sessions, the citrus trees get a top-up every three months with either Dynamic Lifter or Bush Tucker fertilizer, depending on what’s on hand and what the trees are telling us.
It’s a rhythm we’ve grown into, and the trees have too. In return, they give us juicy, fragrant citrus all season long.
