Spring in the Orchard – A Citrus Chapter Begins
Our citrus orchard is glowing in the soft afternoon light, and it’s truly a sight to behold. Sixteen out of our seventeen trees are bursting with blossoms or already cradling tiny green fruits. It's a heartening scene — one that speaks of resilience and renewal.
But there’s always one, isn’t there? One tree holding back, biding its time. Is it late to wake, or struggling quietly? Time will tell. For now, I’m choosing to focus on the abundance: sixteen trees, each full of promise.
Of course, the big question looming is whether they’ll make it through the dry heat ahead. And if they do, what kind of fruit will we get? Will it be extra seedy? Will there be tough dry spots or thicker skins? Gardening in this paddock-style way means letting nature take the lead — and sometimes that means surprises, both good and challenging.
They’ve all had a generous helping of fresh mulch and a hearty feed of blood and bone, so they’re as prepared as they can be. Now we wait. This will be a true test of our approach — low-intervention, grounded in trust and care.
Spring has rolled in with a quiet kind of brilliance this year. It’s offering up another chapter in this ever-evolving story of growing food and living close to the land. Here’s hoping this chapter is a fruitful one — in every sense.
