Growing Proteas All Year Round at G’s Lane Protea Farm

Here at G’s Lane Protea Farm in Esk, Queensland, our vision has always been simple: to grow beautiful Proteas all year round, while working in harmony with nature. Over the last few years, this dream has been slowly but steadily taking shape as our plants mature, our knowledge grows, and our farm expands.

Building a Year-Round Protea Season

As our Protea bushes continue to mature, each plant is producing more flowers than the year before. Combined with the multiple plantings we’ve done in varieties that thrive here, we’re getting closer to our goal of having flowers available across all seasons.

One exciting surprise has been our Protea Pink Ice. We originally expected them to begin blooming in early 2026, but they look like they may even start a little earlier. In fact, Pink Ice has already shown us that it doesn’t always follow the textbook timeline. Although it is meant to be an autumn–winter flowering plant, it bloomed in March 2024 and again in January 2025. We’ve been carefully recording these changes to better understand the rhythms of our farm and the natural variations in flowering times.

Our Protea Varieties

It’s been a rewarding journey discovering which varieties flourish in our soil and climate. We’re having great success with:

  • Pink Ice

  • Red Ice

  • Little Prince

  • King Pinks

  • Lime Lights

  • Pink Minks

Every year we test new varieties and expand the ones that perform well. This season we trialled Red Protea Repens, but sadly two out of four plants didn’t survive. Even losses like this help guide our decisions for future plantings, but on the other hand we planted we planted out Protea Cream Minks that seem to being doing well.

What’s Next for 2026

After a couple of years of hands-on learning, observing our plants, and speaking with other growers, we’re ready to take the next step in 2026. Our plan is to introduce more filler flowers and foliage plants to complement our Proteas and round out our year-round offerings.

Growing Chemical-Free, the Way Nature Intended

One of the things we’re most proud of is growing our Proteas chemical free. This means you might occasionally find a tiny bug, a small hole in a petal, or a nibbled leaf — but that’s part of a healthy ecosystem, not a flaw. Every creature plays a role in creating a more balanced farm and a healthier planet.

We truly believe that by working with nature rather than against it, we’re building something meaningful: a sustainable, thriving Protea farm that continues to grow year after year.
