Summer Progress and Protea Patch Expansion at G’s Lane

With 2026 now well underway and summer in full swing at G’s Lane, seasonal maintenance such as regular mowing has become a priority due to the rapid growth of grass. Alongside this routine work, preparation has commenced for the expansion of our Protea planting area.

Luke has been focused on clearing a heavily grassed section dominated by bladey grass, creating additional space for future plantings. At the same time, I have been working between the existing rows of Proteas to assess spacing and plan the next stage of development. Our aim is to expand the patch to approximately 110 plants, incorporating both Proteas and Leucadendrons.

The newly cleared area allows us to establish planting rows in a straight and consistent layout. Maintaining correct alignment is essential, as relocating Proteas is not recommended. Transplanting is time-consuming, places unnecessary stress on the plants, and requires additional water—resources that are far better directed towards new plantings and ongoing establishment.

Our Protea laneway spans approximately 40 metres in width and 500 metres in length. Each row currently contains seven to eight plants, with rows spaced at roughly three-metre intervals. This spacing supports healthy plant growth, airflow, and ease of access for maintenance.

Planting is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks, with our usual planting window starting in March (Autumn). Autumn planting provides new plants with several seasons to establish strong root systems, ensuring they are well prepared before the onset of the following summer.
