Native cut flowers are both special and beautiful. We planted these gorgeous Banksias not with the intention of using them in our cut flower arrangements, but as part of a paddock rejuvenation project. They’re now also proving to be wonderful additions to our floral designs.
They grow in such an unusual way on the bush that I wasn’t completely sure how best to handle them in terms of preparation. For the first time, I’ve tried bypassing—removing the new growth, which, if left, makes the flower appear to sit right at the base or in the fork of the branch.
We’ve already used some of the new flower buds in arrangements, as even at this early stage they look amazing. The second stage—now known as the flower cone—not only looks incredible but feels amazing too, before it continues to open and transform. Once they change beyond this point, I don’t tend to use them as much.
All of our Banksia success so far has been around the mid-way point of our property. We’ve only had one attempt in our Protea area, but unfortunately they didn’t survive.
